India’s Defense

India does not have general military service, but every citizen is required to serve by summons. The total force figures for India’s armed forces are 1,444,500 active personnel, with a reserve of 1,155,000 personnel (2018, IISS). In addition, semi-military forces made up 1,558,950 personnel, with a reserve of 941,000 personnel.

India has strategic, nuclear forces include ballistic missiles and cruise missiles. India has proprietary intercontinental ballistic missiles under test, with its first test launch in 2014, and has strategic underwater boats for ballistic missiles under delivery.

Army

The army has a personnel force of 1,237,000 active personnel, and a reserve of 906,000 personnel. Heavy equipment includes about 3565 tanks (of which 122 Arjun, 2418 T-72 and over 1025 T-90 ), 3100 storm tanks, about 336 armored personnel vehicles, 110 armored fighters, and about 165 self-propelled artillery, of which about 155 self-propelled artillery. In addition, the Army has about 275 helicopters, 25 medium- heavy drones, heavy artillery, mid-range ballistic missiles, medium-range air defense missiles and air defense artillery.

Air Force

The Air Force has a personnel force of 127,200 active personnel. Material comprising 62 fighters of a MiG-29, 649 combat aircraft (153 MiG-21, 20 MiG-23, 60 MiG-27, 242 Su-30, nine Tejas, 105 Jaguar and 50 Mirage 2000), four AEW & C-planes, six tankers, three reconnaissance aircraft, 242 transport aircraft, 311 training aircraft (of which 103 Hawk can also be used as light fighter aircraft), 410 helicopters, of which 29 combat helicopters, and medium and heavy drones. In addition, the Air Force has medium range air defense missiles.

The Navy

The Navy has a workforce of 67,000 active personnel, of which 7,000 are affiliated with the Navy’s Air Force and 1,200 Marines. The fleet includes a strategic submarine, 15 tactical submarines, one aircraft carrier, 14 fighters, 13 frigates, eight corvettes, 98 patrol vessels, a minesweeper, one dock landing craft, 20 landing craft, and 40 logistics and auxiliary vessels.

The Navy’s aircraft have 45 MiG-29 fighter jets, 13 anti-submarine aircraft, 13 patrol aircraft, 37 transport aircraft, 29 training aircraft, 110 helicopters, and ten medium and heavy drones.

Coastguard

Coast Guard has a personnel strength of 12,600 active personnel, 115 patrol boats, 18 hovercraft, 23 transport and 21 helicopters.

International operations

India participated in 2018 in UN operations in Democratic Republic of Congo (MONUSCO) with 2625 personnel, field hospital and 22 observers, in Lebanon (UNIFIL) with 900 personnel, in South Sudan (UNMISS) with 2351 personnel, two field hospitals and 18 observers, and in Syria / Israel (UNDOF) with 194 personnel.
